Light has a profound effect on color perception; natural light can dramatically alter the way a color appears. Consequently, it is important to consider the direction of windows in any room and to work with this aspect. So, a north facing room with less natural night can be made warmer with jewel colors or brightened by tinted light shades, while a sunny south facing room can be accentuated with soft shades of blue or tinted whites.
While rooms need to be beautiful, they also need to be functional too, and paint can play a crucial role in creating practical and usable spaces.
Slightly darker tones work well in high use areas, while rooms for sleeping should favor colors that are restful and gentle. Red tones are believed to increase appetite so are often chosen for dining spaces, while greens are perceived as soothing and make a good option for areas of contemplation such as library or spa.
