Tips on How to Use a Paint Roller

15 Nov 2023

This article provides you with practical tips to help you paint your room professionally using a roller. Following these tips will help you achieve a smooth finish in a reasonable time, applying the same method used by the paint professionals at Jazeera Paints. All you need are some basic and high-quality tools which you can purchase through our website.

This may not be the first time that you do a painting job yourself, especially after reading our previous article “7 Steps - How to Paint a Room Yourself”. However, the extent of satisfaction with your final result may vary, and this is often due to the method you follow when using the paint roller.

Also, it is important to note that using poor-quality painting tools can make you dissatisfied with the painting result, regardless of the quality of the materials used. So, it is highly recommended to use high quality products and tools to ensure satisfactory results.

In this article, we will let you know about the best method to paint your wall, which most professionals follow to achieve a beautiful result within a reasonable time.

The Best Method for Wall Painting:

First, you should paint the edges of the wall with a paint brush, because using a roller will most likely affect the adjacent wall. Second, clean the roller from any fuzz or dust stuck on it by rolling it on the sticky side of a masking tape.

One of the common mistakes when using the paint roller is submerging it in the barrel then starting painting directly. The correct way which paint experts recommend is to dip the roller in the barrel once or twice then pass it on the paint tray about 5 to 6 times. Another way, which is even better, is to pour the paint in the tray and roll the roller on the tray directly.

After filling the roller with paint following the above-mentioned method, start painting from the bottom of the wall to the top, going down at an oblique angle (30 degrees), and then to the top again. Repeat this process 3 to 5 times until the wall is completely covered. In case the wall surface is large, it is recommended to divide the wall into two or three sections at your discretion to get a better result and make application easier.

Use High-Quality Paint Roller:

One of the most crucial points that affect the final result is the quality of the roller you are using. Some people tend to sacrifice the quality for the cost. However, low-cost and low-quality tools will give you an unsatisfactory result for several reasons. The first is the low density of the roller nap, which forces you to repeat applying the paint more than necessary and costs you much time and effort. Furthermore, the most prominent flaw is that some low-quality rollers leave loose bits of fuzz on the wall during application and thus affect the final result. Also, considering quality versus cost, high-quality paint rollers are not necessarily high-cost, as we provide on our website an excellent variety to choose from and at very reasonable prices here. Also, you can reuse them if you clean them well and correctly, which we will cover later in this article in the coming points.

Important Tip:

Do not press on the roller too hard while painting, as over-pressing may affect the distribution of the paint on the wall; and you will not get the right paint coverage and the desired result.

Paint the areas under and at the top of the windows horizontally. Afterwards, smoothen the paint in a vertical way. The horizontal method gives a good and clean paint result while the vertical method makes the direction of the paint consistent with the rest of the wall.

Keep the Edge Wet:

Maintaining a wet edge while rolling the roller on the wall is of utmost importance for all painting works. What we mean here by a wet edge is that you do not leave the edge of the first paint line or stroke you just made with the roller to dry. It must be followed directly with a second paint line starting from the middle of the first line, so the paint edge on the wall is constantly wet without leaving it dry until you finish covering the wall. This will ensure a smooth looking work as you are merging the lines until you cover the entire wall. It also helps you make sure you do not leave any small areas uncovered with paint. If the paint edge on the wall dries and you come back to finish it after a while, the final result will be unsatisfactory, as this will create clear visible lines on the wall.

Removing Paint Lumps on the Wall:

In case you are not experienced in painting and you decided to do the painting yourself, you may face some problems that you can solve easily. One of these problems is that the paint may gather and form lumps on the wall. The solution is to remove them directly using a damp/wet piece of cloth.

How to make the paint roller last longer?

Directly after you finish using the roller, clean it in two stages: The first stage is to remove all the remaining paint using a special tool in the shape of a semicircle that helps you scrape and squeeze the paint absorbed by the roller and remove a large amount of it. The second stage depends on the type of paint you are using, if the paint is water-based, you can clean the roller with water, but if the paint is oil-based, then clean the roller with some paint thinner. You can find out your paint type by checking your product's specifications.

How to avoid harsh edges and lines of paint on the wall?

Harsh lines are a common problem in painting when using the roller in the wrong way, especially if you leave the edge to dry. It is difficult to get rid of it unless it is sanded with very strong sandpaper. Here, we will give you some tips to avoid this problem:

1. Do not dip the roller in the paint barrel to the fullest because the amount of paint that the roller will pick will be more than needed; and this will affect the wall. So, it is recommended to use the paint tray so that you fill the tray with paint and roll the roller on the tray directly. Roll the roller on the high part of the tray several times to get rid of any excess paint.

2. Do not press the paint roller too hard while rolling it on the wall; keep your hands movement light and smooth while using the roller.

3. After filling the roller with paint, never start painting from wall edges or corners, because the first roller stroke leaves a large amount of paint on the surface and edges are difficult to blend. Instead, start from about 6 inches from the wall edge/corner applying most of the paint on the roller, then move towards the edge/corner gradually.

We will be happy if you share the result of your painting job on our social media pages.
