  • How to calculate the amount of paint you need?

How to calculate the amount of paint you need?

Solutions & Tips • 27 Aug 2020

Before painting interior walls or ceilings, it is necessary to know the right amount of paint required before purchase, it is very difficult to start a painting project and then discover what you have is not enough to finish it.

You can reduce the chance of this happening by calculating how much paint is needed.

Please take into account the surface nature, as well as the number of coats applied, most interior paint requires two coats for a premium finish.

*When transitioning between dark and light paint colors, it is advised to start with a base coat/primer paint, we recommend Jazeera White.

In this article you will discover how to:

- Measure the surface area of a single wall.

- Measure the surface area of a wall with doors or windows.

- Measure a whole room.

And finally, how to use a paint calculator.

Measuring the surface area of a single wall:

Using a measuring tape, multiply the width and the height of a wall to calculate the overall square meters, for example, a wall 6 meters wide and 3 meters high.

Using a measuring tape, multiply the width and the height of a wall to calculate the overall square meters, for example, a wall 6 meters wide and 3 meters high.

6×3= 18m²

Note: For regular paint, we always recommend applying two coats, to do the calculation, multiply the overall square meters of the wall by 2.

18×2= 36m²

After finishing previous calculations, find the coverage

rate of the paint, it is located at the product details section, for example:

Product: Novel

Color: North Meadows

Sheen: Silk

Coverage rate: 14m²

Divide the overall square meters by the coverage rate.

36÷14= 2.5L

Paint required: 2 and half liters.

Measuring the surface area of a wall with doors or windows:

Follow the previous step to measure the width and the height of the wall, then measure the width and the height of doors and windows separately.

Calculate the overall square meters of the doors and windows by multiplying Width x Height, then subtract the result from the overall square meters of the wall, the final result is the surface area square meters.

Examples:

A wall with a door:

Start by measuring the width and the height of the wall to calculate the overall square meters (Width x Height), for example, a wall 4 meters wide and 3 meters high.

4×3= 12m²

Note: For regular paint, we always recommend applying two coats, to do the calculation, multiply the overall square meters of the wall by 2.

12×2= 24m²

Then measure the door (Width x Height), for example, a door one meter wide and 2.5 meters high.

1×2.5= 2.5m²

Wall overall square meters (Two coats of paint) 24m²

Door overall square meters 2.5m²

Subtract the door square meter from the wall’s square meter to find the surface area square meters.

24-2.5= 21.5m²

After finishing previous calculations, find the coverage

rate of the paint, it is located at the product details section, for example:

Product: Green Matt

Color: Baby powder

Sheen: Matt

Coverage rate: 14.3m²

Divide the overall square meter by the coverage rate.

21.5÷14.3= 1.5L

Paint required: One and half liters.

A wall with windows:

Start by measuring the width and the height of the wall to calculate the overall square meters (Width x Height), for example, a wall 6 meters wide and 4 meters high.

6×4= 24m²

Note: For regular paint, we always recommend applying two coats, to do the calculation, multiply the overall square meter of the wall by 2.

12×2= 24m²

Then measure the windows (Width x Height), for example, two windows, each one meter wide and one meters high.

1×1= 1m²

1+1= 2m²

Wall overall square meters (Two coats of paint) 48m²

Windows overall square meters 2m²

Subtract the windows square meters from the wall’s square meters to find the surface area square meters.

48-2= 46m²

After finishing previous calculations, find the coverage

rate of the paint, it is located at the product details section, for example:

Product: Green Silk

Color: Milky

Sheen: Silk

Coverage rate: 12.3m²

Divide the overall square meter by the coverage rate.

46÷12.3= 3.7L

Paint required: 3 liters and 700ml.

Measuring a whole room:

Start by measuring the width of all 4 walls, then add the measurements together, for example a room 5x6 and 3 meters high:

6+5+6+5=22

Multiply by the height:

22×3= 66m²

Note: For regular paint, we always recommend applying two coats, to do the calculation, multiply the overall square meter of the wall by 2.

66×2= 132m²

After calculating doors and windows square meters, subtract from the room’s overall square meters.

132-2-6 = 124m²

After finishing previous calculations, find the coverage

rate of the paint, divide the room’s overall square meters by coverage rate to find liters needed.

Kitchens & Bathrooms:

Apply the same previous examples to find the wall’s square meters first (Width x Height), then multiply it by 2 to count for the coats.

Subtract all kitchen and bathroom’s fittings (storage, sink, tub, etc) from the wall’s square meters, and finally, divide by coverage rate.

To calculate the storage square meters, measure width, length and height, multiply (Width x Height) divided by height, for example:

Bath tub two meters wide, length 700cm and 500cm high.

2×0.7= 1.4m²

1.4÷0.5= 2.8m²

Using paint calculator:

You can calculate how much paint is required by using the paint calculator, available on our website, all you need is the surface overall square meters.

To use the paint calculator, head to the products section, choose the product, choose the desired color and sheen to start the calculation as follows:

To calculate the amount of paint required with estimated measures for doors and windows, add the number of doors and windows before starting the calculation as follows:

How to use the Paint Calculator

*all effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the calculations, however, requirements may vary depending on the surface, type of paint, sheen, and choice of color.
