How to Choose a Color for Your Room

15 Sep 2022

Choosing a color for your room is an essential and crucial step in setting up your house, one which should be carefully planned for its huge impact on your mood and the ambiance. It is much more important to pick the right color instead of wrapping up the painting process using a random color that might not suit your taste or the nature of the place.

Before you begin choosing a paint color, you need to be familiar with color types and how to coordinate them. You also need to understand each color and how to use it. When you understand colors, it’ll become much easier for you to properly combine and mix them so they would come together beautifully. In addition to that, you’ll have a wider range of colors to choose from, and you will be able to come up with countless new color variations in your own unique way.

Color Classification:

What are the classifications of colors? In the world of colors, there is a specific classification agreed upon by specialists, which is:

Primary colors.

Secondary colors.

Mixed colors.

Primary Colors:

Primary colors consist of only three colors: yellow, red and green.

All other colors are subdivisions of these three colors, as an infinite number of colors can be made from them.

Red color:

A strong and vivid color that signifies two meanings. The first is its connotation of love and passionate feelings, and the second is its expression of power and intense emotions. That is why you’ll find many sports clubs use it in their designs.

Yellow color:

The color of the sun and gold. It is classified according to its degrees. Pale light yellow gives the soul tranquility and relaxation while bright yellow is a very striking color used to capture the eye’s attention, make things pop, and does not contribute to relaxation at all.

Blue color:

Blue symbolizes meanings of depth, inspiration and calmness; that’s why mosques, in the old days, used to be adorned with blue ornaments and Quranic verses. We find that prominent in the Prophet's Mosque in Medina.

Secondary Colors:

Secondary colors consist of three colors: Green, Orange, and Violet. Each is a mixture of two primary colors.

This is the common rule for color mixing:

Yellow + Red = Orange

Red + Blue = Violet

Blue + Yellow = Green

Mixed Colors:

Mixed colors include all the other colors of various degrees and types. They are the result of mixing any two colors or group of colors with each other, whether a primary color with a secondary color or even three colors; and there lies the magic of colors as there is no limit to innovation, mixing, and experimentation to come up with a satisfying result that suits the nature and conditions of your place.

Ways to use colors:

Now that we concluded the introduction on types of colors, we come to an equally important matter which is how to use and coordinate colors in your space. There are several methods you can follow regarding color coordination in one single space whether it is a bedroom, living room, or else. Color application is not limited to walls only, you also want to consider how the color of the wall blends and coordinates with the furniture and even the antiques and the simplest of details. Below, we will mention the most important of these methods.

1. Monochromatic method:

This method involves using the different shades of the same color in a single space. Here are three reasons for choosing this type of design:

It gives the place a consistency between all its elements so that one part does not out-shine another.

It makes it easier for you in the future to change any part of the room because all you need is to add any element of the same color.

2. Adjacent color method:

This method involves the inclusion of two or more colors in the same place; each color is adjacent to a similar color. The following image shows the adjacent colors.

3. Complementary colors method:

This method involves two completely opposite colors such as white and black. When they are mixed together, we get a different color. This method is also called the contrasting colors method. The two colors are used in one space.

4. Triadic color method:

This method involves the use of three colors only in one place. These colors are either primary (red – yellow – blue) or secondary (green – orange – violet), and it can be recognized by drawing an equilateral triangle inside the color circle to obtain the three colors.

Now that you’re familiar with the types of colors and how they are used, the most important question becomes “what is the best color for my room or any other room? and what is the best way to apply it?” The answer is: there is no such thing as the best paint color or the best way of application, because it all depends on you and your personal taste. Ask yourself, what do you prefer, and which color reflects your personality? How much light enters the room? How big is the room? All these factors give you a perspective on which color you should choose for your space.
